Starting a gym when you feel completely unfit or nervous can feel like a big step.
Not because the workouts are hard…
but because of everything going through your head before you even get there.
Most people are thinking things like:
“Where do I even start?”
“What if I can’t keep up?”
“What if I look completely out of place?”
And honestly — that’s the part that stops most people. When I ask clients about their feelings before they joined, they almost always tell me things like those above.
It’s not about their effort. And not about your discipline.
It’s more about not knowing how it’s going to feel, what other people will think and if you’ll even be able to do it.
You dont need to go ‘all in’ from Day one.
One of the most common things I see new people thinking, is that they’ll need to go all in from day one
Do more sessions.
Do the harder workouts.
Trying to “make up for lost time.”
It sounds like the right approach… but it’s usually what causes a lot of people to stop a few weeks later.
Because it’s just too much, too soon.
What actually works is much simpler than that.
Start smaller than you think you should.
Two, maybe three sessions in a week is plenty. I strongly advise you start here.
Not forever — just to begin with.
That’s enough to start building a routine without it taking over your life. You’re going to feel a bit sore, so let’s keep it all manageable and not try to overdo it.
And when you do start, your goal isn’t to smash yourself.
It’s just to show up… and leave feeling like you could come back again. My favourite thing to say to our coaches is that we want people to walk out saying to themselves “I could do that again’” Not “I’m never doing that again”
That might sound a bit underwhelming, but it’s important. If you haven’t done any exercise for a long time – or ever – taking a few weeks to get into routine really is the best way to tackle this.
If every session leaves you exhausted, sore, and dreading the next one…
you won’t stay consistent.
But if you finish thinking, “I could do that again,”
you’re much more likely to come back.
And that’s where progress actually comes from.
If you’re in Maryborough and looking at gyms, this is where the experience can feel very different depending on where you go.
Some places expect you to figure things out on your own.
Others guide you through it from the start — which makes a big difference when you’re new.
A lot of people also worry about not knowing what to do once they’re there.
That’s completely normal.
You’re not expected to walk in with a plan or understand every exercise.
In the early stages, simple is more than enough. We will individually teach you every exercise and make sure you’re doing everything safely. As a Rookie you’ll get loads of extra rests and breaks too.
We will start with basic movements, repeated regularly, and that will take you a long way.
You don’t need anything fancy.
There’s also a part that doesn’t get talked about much.
It might feel a bit awkward at first.
You might feel unsure, or like everyone else knows what they’re doing.
They don’t.
Every single person you see in a gym started somewhere.
And most people are far more focused on themselves than they are on you.
That feeling fades quickly once you’ve been a few times and start to find your rhythm.
One of the hardest things early on is not seeing results straight away.
You might expect to see changes straight away…
and when that doesn’t happen, it’s easy to feel like it’s not working.
But in those first few weeks, your real progress isn’t all about how you look, yet.
It’s showing up.
It’s building a routine.
It’s feeling a little more comfortable each time you go.
That’s the foundation everything else builds on. And if you consistently come to those 2-3 sessions every week, you will start to feel fitter. You will feel increased energy. This happens fast for those who make it a routine
If you’ve been thinking about starting, keep it simple.
You don’t need to feel ready.
You don’t need to be fitter first.
You just need to begin — and let consistency do the work from there.
If you want help with that, having someone guide you through those early weeks makes a big difference.
Not just with what to do… but with building confidence and keeping things on track.
We’ll help you to pick a couple of days that work for you and you commit to just getting there.
No pressure to be perfect.
No pressure to push hard.
That’s exactly why we start people the way we do — so you don’t have to figure it out on your own. Having someone guide you through the early weeks makes such a big difference.
That’s exactly what we focus on here at FitterFaster. We aim to be the most welcoming gym in Maryborough by helping people to get started without feeling overwhelmed.
